( It's been two years since she left voicemail. Longer maybe? She has no idea. ) It's Rosita.
( And a looooooong pause. ) Look, if I just shoved a gun in the face of a friend of yours I'm going to feel like an ass. Her name's Ruby. Call her or... something.
[He hadn't answered because he'd been in the middle of work, but after checking the I.D. on the missed call and then getting the voicemail conformation, well, his job could shove it for a few. There were more important things in life.]
You okay? You need me to come find you?
[He'd met Ruby all of once, Rosita was the priority. Period.]
No. It's some real fucked up bullshit, but it's legitimate bullshit. The thing is, Rick and Carl and Enid were dragged here from some time in the future from when I was, and I was pulled here from some time in the future from when you were. That storm was about two, two and half weeks from the time I got dragged in. Carl's from about two to three months ahead of that time. So when you see him, don't freak out. He lost one of his eyes during some heavy shit that I ain't been told much about.
[Maybe, just maybe, the idea was dumb one, she starts to think, second guesses herself even, but she's already bought the gifts and given Rick his, so it's only fair that she doesn't back out now. Daryl's a bit of a different (still good) character than Rick though, so this time she feels the need to go about a different approach.
Rather than the direct one this time, she takes advantage of the invitation she gets later in the day to come in and discreetly place her gift for the redneck on the couch where he obviously sleeps, tucked between the pillow and the blanket.
Of course when she does this, it's when she thinks she has a second alone in the room, when no one will notice. The hope here is that he'll find it later. When she's not around at least. That's the gamble though, because she's unaware of whether he's home or not in that moment. Or if that's when he could walk in.]
[Daryl was not, as luck would have it, 'home' when she was hiding her gifts. He was out getting his things from the De Chima house he'd been staying in while Rick was being not-Rick. The one he'd been assigned to by the government and had never actually slept in prior to the whole mixed histories shit that had gone down. He walked in on her as she was just putting the blanket back in place when he walked through the door. He didn't have a very good line of sight on what was going on, what with her back to him and her body blocking his view, but he saw the blanket laid out nicely and he frowned.]
You moving in?
[Because if she was and was taking the couch, he was okay with taking the floor. Just needed to know what was going on.]
[She didn't actually hear him come in until the door shut. But the second she did, she jumped half surprised and stood up straight, turning to face him. She let go of the blanket she had been straightening out.]
No. Just waiting around.
[She could tell him the full truth of what she's doing, but at this point she's already set the gift where he can find it later. Telling him now would only make this moment more awkward.]
[Daryl's brows drew together and he leaned slightly to the side to get a better look at the blanket and pillow. He didn't really use those when he slept on the couch, so seeing them spread out all nice and welcoming... he assumed it couldn't possibly be for him. But if it wasn't for Enid, then who else could it be for?
So if she was just waiting around, she had probably been trying to move the blanket so she could sit without messing it up. And that probably meant...]
[A light nod.] Yeah. Rick was here, but stepped out for a minute. Was just let in to wait for Carl.
[And that's all this is, for the most part. Feeling conscious of what she's not sharing though she steps a little more away from the couch, wanting very much not be so close to it and hoping to draw some attention away from what she was even doing near it in the first place. Yet almost as noticeably, she doesn't move that much away from it either. Can't bring herself to. Not yet.]
[That is far from what she was trying to be actually - but she wasn't able to play as cool as she hoped she could be, so she figured not to pretend anymore. With that one thing, at least. She nods in return.]
Yeah, I know. You just startled me, that's all.
[Enid states, but then nods in return. Because, well. As per his encouragement, she decides to move to kitchen with him and take one of the seats along the dining table. And she forces herself to not glance one more time back at the couch, even when he places his bag on it, leaving her to completely miss how said bag caused the blanket to shift just enough to bring her gift to poke out from underneath the covers a little.
A hint of green from the bow is left there to stick out, for anyone with good eyes to spot eventually. But none the wiser, she takes a seat and ponders half a second about the offer of a drink. Hm, water or soda? She feels like--]
[Daryl didn't quiet catch sight of the bow just yet. His back was turned to it as he grabbed two glasses and filled them first with ice and then from the tap. Ice water was a treat he didn't think he'd ever get used to having again. Even in Alexandria where they had the electricity to run the fridges.
He set one glass in front of her and leaned his ass against the counter while he took a long drink of his.]
You doing okay over there?
[A quick jerk of his head indicated her own dorm room. He was much more used to his family socializing with each other rather than keep to themselves in separate rooms. Enid wasn't like that. So the urge to check up on her was a lot higher than on the rest of his people. And that urge was almost always a top priority.]
[Enid nodded just one more time, at his apology.] That's okay. This is where you live. [And where she doesn't, goes the rest of that in a sort of silent indication. She's saying he doesn't need to explain it or apologize.
Ice water isn't something she thought about in a long time either. So when he fills her a glass with some and hands it over, she watches the icicles that float on the top with something akin to interest and amusement. It was a good idea after all, and she appreciated it as much. Her expression made that clear. And maybe she was about to express that, but her attention flicks up to him and mentally on her dorm with with that question.
She's used to being relatively alone, without a group or guardian even amongst a group, though, so it comes as a curiosity to her that he'd ask.]
[He wasn't sure if she was being honest or not. But he couldn't call her on it if she weren't. He didn't know her well enough yet.
Still, he liked her company. And the small talk between them felt a lot more comfortable than it had when he first arrived. Wasn't so bad to share simple, superficial stuff with her. Felt a little more 'normal'.]
[She's being honest enough. You know, besides sharing how it does get a little boring (read: lonely) by herself over there sometimes, but she's not about to share that. Not ever, really. That problem is easily fixed by going out and going stuff on her own - like clothes and jewelry shopping, for example - or finding Carl to hang out with.
Forgetting that though, she shrugs casually at that. It's less the brush off short of shrug and more the 'yeah, that's right' kind of shrug. It's affirmative in any case. But that's because they do kind of have a bit of a small talk thing going for them and she doesn't mind it either.]
Yeah, I sort of did. Though it sort of found me first.
[The Cat was cute. And then she adopted it, etc, etc. All that pretty much goes without saying so she's doesn't feel the need to say it. There is only one thing she feels like she should add.]
[He made that small snort that masked a desire to laugh a little louder and a little longer. A reaction he'd long since trained himself to keep under wraps. But the twist of his lips couldn't be ignored.]
[He was outright teasing at this point, pushing himself off the counter and heading across the room to the couch. Daryl set his glass down and went to move the blanket. What humor he had didn't quite disappear when the bag under it became completely visible. But there was a good amount of confusion as he reached out and picked it up. Turned slowly toward her with a questioning look. The fussing at the covers suddenly made a lot more sense if she'd been trying to hide this there.]
[Hey. She can joke, and still tell the truth, too. Of course when she first found Timmy she wasn't sure she was going to keep him so the naming process was put at a bit of distance, but then Carl named the cat and later she threw the name Tommy out there because, the matching names, it was amusing to her at the time. And it stuck.
Enid never did it to get back at Carl, though. And that's exactly how she seems to appear until Daryl gets up and moves over to the couch. It's only then that she seems to almost freeze up completely, after turning to watch him head across the room. She isn't able to say anything to stop him, just stare in nothing but silence. Yeah, that, she had been trying to hide.]

Inside a clear white bag with a bow that ties off the top is two smooth rock soaps and two eggs and bacon, breakfast shaped soaps. Attached is a small card with her name signed on it.
